On-screen buttons work, but nothing beats physical controls for action games and racers. PPSSPP supports almost any controller that your phone or computer recognizes, and setting one up takes a couple of minutes.

Pairing on Android

Put your controller in pairing mode, open the phone's Bluetooth settings and select it. Xbox, DualShock 4, DualSense and most generic Bluetooth gamepads pair this way. USB controllers work through a USB-C adapter. Once connected, the emulator detects it automatically and hides the touch buttons if you enable that option.

Pairing on Windows

Plug in the controller or pair it through Settings > Bluetooth & devices. Recent emulator versions recognize Xbox pads instantly and offer native support for DualSense, DualShock and Switch Pro controllers on Windows.

Mapping the buttons

Go to Settings > Controls > Control mapping. Select each PSP input and press the button you want for it. A natural layout puts the PSP's four face buttons on your controller's face buttons, L and R on the shoulder buttons, Start and Select on the menu buttons, and the analog nub on the left stick.

Using the right stick

The PSP had only one analog nub, so the right stick is free. Many players map it to the D-pad for games that use the D-pad for the camera, or to a speed toggle for fast-forwarding through slow sections.

Hotkeys worth adding

  • Save state and Load state on the stick clicks.
  • Fast-forward on a trigger for grinding in RPGs.
  • Pause menu on the guide or home button.

Per-game profiles

Some games feel better with different layouts. Start a game, open the pause menu and choose Create game config. Changes you make from then on apply only to that title, so your global layout stays untouched.

If buttons respond in the wrong order, check that the controller is not in an alternate mode. Many generic pads switch between X-input and D-input with a button combination.
